The development and design of video games is a complicated process. This process requires a lot of programming and visual design work. These two aspects of game development often come up first when you start thinking about the game industry. However, there is another important part of game development that makes the player’s experience better and lets them dive deeper into the game atmosphere: audio design.
In most games, music delivers the overall mood of the game and is related to the game theme. We decided to take the same approach. Newt! is a puzzle game, thus the music in our game is slow, quiet, ambient, and mysterious. This type of music would not distract the player from solving puzzles and would bring more mystery to the game. Moreover, the music is related to the level's environment.
Sound effects make the player understand what is currently happening in the game not only visually but also by hearing a specific action. In addition, sound effects should bring the atmosphere of the game to the player. In our game, you get to explore cave and ruins areas. In the cave area, sound effects like water drops or the scraping of stone while pushing a box bring the environment around the player to life. Moreover, through the holes in the cave, a player can hear the outside wildlife.

In the ruins area, the player can hear the scraping of stones and a waterfall, and other atmospheric sounds.

Audio can enhance the player’s understanding of the game’s environment and atmosphere. In our game, we managed to populate each level with various sounds that will improve the experience of the player.
